302: Superlative

I had meant for my previous list to be one of the best, if not the best, lists I had produced so far, but all  I could come up with was a chronological oddity. Then, in a feverish fit of inspiration, I knew how to come up with the most superlative list ever! And here it is, possibly the best so far (or the worst, or the shortest, or the loudest, or the orangest, or…).

300: 3:00

I was having difficulty deciding what fabulous idea to go with for our 300th list (maybe a list of songs about the Battle of Thermopylae, maybe a list of what was playing in the bowling alley on the night of my perfect game, maybe something else altogether…), but in the end I went with numerology again. This compilation came together after I read a little about the perfect three minute pop song (here and here), and I just used what was on my iPod to supply my list. They are all 3 minutes exactly according to iTunes, but may be a second or two off in either direction in reality (but I’m not going to double-check, because according to Einsteinian physics, by the time I did check everything the universe would have just messed it all up again). I think the first one on this list is the best example here of the perfect 3 minute pop song, but I would love to hear your opinion(s).

1. Sly & The Family Stone — Life
2. Desmond Dekker & The Aces — I’ve Got The Blues
3. Sam And Dave — I’m Your Puppet
4. Sharon Jones And The Dap-Kings — If You Call
5. Jurassic 5 — Without A Doubt
6. The Turbans — When You Dance
7. Universal Robot Band — Disco Trek (Star Trek Theme)
8. Buzzcocks — Just Lust
9. Wilco — I Must Be High
10. Probot — Shake Your Blood
11. The Extra Lens — Only Existing Footage
12. Galt MacDermot — Black Enough (Vocal By Melba Moore)
13. Dr. Geoffrey Holdstrom — Kissing My Muscles

298: Complaints (Why?)

Alright, I had a great holiday and all, but 3 out of 4 readers of UsefulMusic (I mean literally three of the four people that look at this thing) have complained recently that the “Revisitation” motif has played itself out. Therefore, I compiled a list of other people that like to complain about things and plaintively ask “Why?”. Also, if you complain more I’ll put out more Yes lists.
